The Benefits of Hot Yoga

Practitioners of hot yoga receive all the traditional benefits of yoga and more! Added heat increases heart rate, which encourages the body to spend more energy (calories) in its efforts to stay cool during exercise. In addition, the warmer environment dilates the capillaries, which facilitates greater distribution of oxygen. Increasing oxygen to muscles, glands, organs and other tissues also helps remove more toxins, which results in greater benefits for the immune system. Finally, once the body is warmed through movement the heat helps the body’s natural stretch mechanism, allowing for greater range of motion in joints, muscles, and ligaments.

What Classes are Good for Beginners?

If you are suffering from chronic pain, Bikram Yoga is the most therapeutic and great for stiff bodies. This is a 90 minute HEATED class but you will awaken your spine and feel alive by the end.

Restorative is a NON HEATED class that is very beneficial for lower back and hip pain while also great to slow down the mind to enjoy a deep feeling of relaxation.

Slow Flow is a slowed down Power Vinyasa combined with some nice deep hip openers at the end which makes this a great choice for students getting started as well as seasoned practitioners looking for some long mindful holds.

HOT FLOW is a 60 minute Bikram-inspired class but done to a flow. Teachers will add and twist some of the series so be ready to feel focused and energized!

As you walk into our Studio you will feel a gentle heat that will increase as students move through class. Also, our Studio is virtually silent as our heating system makes absolutely no noise. This allows the students to concentrate on the teacher’s instructions and their practice.

How Does Infrared Heat Work?

Infrared heaters convert light directly to heat, warming nearby objects without raising the air temperature. This allows a student in an infrared class to absorb heat while the surrounding air does not. This type of heat is most like natural sunlight. In fact, 80% of the light that makes it to Earth is infrared, making it a form of light that is easily processed by our bodies. Since the air itself does not get hot with infrared heat, it is suitable and tolerable for students especially those with respiratory issues who find it uncomfortable or even risky to go in a heated yoga class. Additionally, infrared heat does not recirculate air thereby reducing the circulation of dirty air and bacteria.

Infrared heat differs greatly from, say, a heater that heats the air in a room, because it actually is absorbed by the skin and has a greater effect on increased circulation, muscle flexibility and detoxification. As your body absorbs infrared waves, molecules begin to vibrate, causing them to start to expel the toxins, fat and impurities from your cells into your blood stream. These will then be released from your body in the form of sweat. The result is an incredible cleansing effect at a cellular level. Your muscles and internal organs will be gently warmed. This form of heat is perfectly safe. Hospitals use infrared heat to keep premature babies warm.

What do I need for class?

If you have them, bring a yoga mat, towel and water bottle. Mats and towels may be rented or purchased at the studio. Bottled water and coconut water are available for purchase as well. NO GLASS WATER BOTTLES ARE ALLOWED IN EITHER STUDIO due to the barefoot nature of our location. Pleas bring metal or plastic bottles to class. Mahalo for your cooperation in advance.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothes that breath and allow you to move freely. For women we recommend stretchy pants or shorts and a sports bra or tank top. For men we recommend shorts or trunks and a T shirt. Please no socks, yoga is practiced barefoot.

What if I’m not flexible?

No problem! Most new yoga students are not flexible, and while increased flexibility is one of the many benefits of practicing yoga it’s not the goal. If you find yourself struggling with or unable to do a pose back off and breathe. Typically the ones that we feel the most are the ones we need the most. A gentle stretch is good but you should NEVER experience pain in yoga.

Which class should I take?

Deciding which class is right for you depends on a number of things. We offer 60-90 minute classes and from non heated to 105 degree classes. Please visit our class offerings page to see what class seems to fit your needs. Still not sure, give us a call or try them all!

What if I am tired and want to leave class early?

We encourage you to try to stay in the classroom the entire class if possible. There are a number of “resting postures” like corpse pose and child’s pose that you can do if you need a break. Resting postures help you recover so you can continue your practice.

Do I have to chant?

In general no. Some classes may open or close with the chanting of “OM” but in most classes we simply start and end in a quiet meditative state. Chanting is not required.

What are adjustments? (I don’t want anyone touching me)

In addition to breath, optimal alignment is key in yoga. As such, many instructors walk around the room while teaching and offer verbal suggestions and/or physical adjustments to help students feel the pose in a deeper way and learn more about safe anatomical alignment. Hands on assists usually feel supportive to most but not everyone likes them. If you don’t want to be touched just let the teacher know.
